Significant impacts of the TRMM satellite orbit boost on climatological records of tropical precipitation

With the unprecedented spaceborne precipitation radar(PR),the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM) satellite has collected high-quality precipitation measurements for over ten years.The TRMM/PR data are nowadays extensively exploited in numerous meteorological and hydrological fields.Yet an artificial orbit boost of the TRMM satellite in August 2001 modulated the observation parameters,which inevitably affects climatological applications of the PR data and needs to be clarified.This study investigates the orbit boost effects of the TRMM satellite on the PR-derived precipitation characteristics.Both the potential impacts on precipitation frequency(PF) and precipitation intensity(PI) are carefully analyzed.The results show that the total PF decreases by 8.3% and PI increases by 4.0% over the tropics after the orbit boost.Such changes significantly exceed the natural variabilities and imply the strong effects of orbit boost on precipitation characteristics.The impacts on stratiform precipitation and convective precipitation are inconsistent,which is attributed to their distinct precipitation features.Further analysis reveal that the increased PI of stratiform precipitation is mainly due to the decreased frequencies of light precipitation,while the semi-constant PI of convective precipitation is caused by the concurrently decreased frequencies of light and heavy precipitation.A modification is applied to the post-boost PR precipitation data to retrieve the actual trends of tropical precipitation characteristics.It is found that the PI of total-precipitation approximately keeps invariable from 1998 to 2005.The total PF has no obvious trend over tropical oceans but decreases considerably over tropical lands.

The cloud variations under subtropical high(STH) conditions during summers over a ten-year period are studied using combined data from the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction.The results reveal that clouds mainly experience an isolated evolution in the STHs,which is designated in this study by the 1540 gpm geopotential lines at 850 hPa.In the STH domain throughout the Northern Hemisphere,the average amount of total clouds exceeds 30%.Low clouds dominate in the STH domain,contributing over 60%of total cloud amount within the Pacific subtropical high and over 40%within the Atlantic subtropical high.The prevalence of low clouds in above regions is determined by the circulation pattern around 150°-180°E and 850 hPa,which suppresses both the upward development of the cloud tops and the water vapor divergences near the surface.Furthermore,clouds present great geographical incoherence within the STH domain.In the eastern STHs,the amount of middle and low clouds increases to peak in the early morning and decreases to a trough in the afternoon,while the amount of high clouds remains stable throughout the day.Conversely,in the western STHs,the diurnal amplitude of low and middle clouds is less than three,while high clouds dramatically reach the maximum in the afternoon and drop to the minimum in the evening.Among the nine cloud categories,stratocumulus clouds with greater optical thickness account for the most under STH conditions,no matter their occurrence or amount,causing more shortwave cloud radiative forcing to cool the local atmosphere and surface as a consequence.

提出一种新的统计方案,以目标面积比为核心度量指标,并参照连续圆形目标定义目标面积比意义上的等效半径,实现对目标宏观尺度大小的量化估计。此方法能有效减轻轨道截断效应所造成的目标尺度低估,可对通过计数类方法得到的目标空间尺度做出有效修正。

基于ISCCP观测的云量全球分布及其在NCEP再分析场中的指示被引量:26

国际卫星云气候计划(ISCCP)已经积累了20多年的持续云观测资料,提供了迄今为止最具权威的全球尺度云量信息,为全面认识全球尺度云气候特征提供了有利条件。利用长期稳定的ISCCP D2云量资料,文中系统地分析了全球尺度总云量以及高、中、低云云量的空间分布特征。结果表明,全球总云量均值为66.5(单位:%),其中洋面71.6,陆面55.9。全球云量分布极不均衡,且海陆差异显著,洋面局部云量最高可达90,而包括南极大陆在内的所有陆面区域多为云量低值中心。高云和低云全球分布形式存在明显差异,其中陆面以高云为主,洋面低云相对较多。低云集中分布于太平洋东南部和东北部的近海岸地区以及南半球洋面,热带辐合带、南太平洋辐合带等大尺度强对流活动区内高云数量占优势。特别,在气候平均态上分离低云和高云区,并结合对NCEP再分析资料所提供环流背景场的分析,研究发现两类云所对应的垂直和水平风场具有明显的差异。高云区从低空到对流层顶为一致的强下降运动,低云区的中高层被上升气流所控制但近地面一般存在弱的上升运动。反映在水平辐散场上,两类云对应的辐散度在垂直方向上变化趋势相反,其中低云对应的典型背景场为低层辐散高空辐合。进一步考虑水汽因素,600与850hPa水汽通量散度差对低云(负差异)和高云(正差异)的云量空间分布有较好的指示意义。

基于TRMM VIRS可见光和红外五通道的白天云检测方案被引量:8

热带测雨卫星(Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission,TRMM)积累的从可见光到微波的多光谱云和降水辐射信息,为全球尺度云和降水参数反演研究提供了宝贵资料。云/晴空识别作为反演流程中的关键一环,对反演结果准确度起到决定性的作用。利用可见光/红外扫描仪(visible and infrared scanner,VIRS)提供的五通道辐射通量观测,提出一种可依靠TRMM平台观测资料独立实现的白天云检测方案.此方案由地形识别、二维表云检测和决策树云检测三个基本步骤构成,检测结果分为无云覆盖、部分云覆盖和完全云覆盖三种.与MODIS云产品的对比结果表明,非冰雪下垫面云检测精度较高,云量均值差异低于5%。特别对于冰雪下垫面,结合使用1.6μm反射率以及3.7μm和10.8μm亮温信息,利用阈值法对冰雪覆盖的晴空像素和真实云像素实现了较好的分离.利用该云检测方案,仅借助TRMM平台可见光和红外多通道资料即获得可信的云/晴空识别,这将为基于TRMM卫星多仪器融合资料的云和降水参数反演等相关研究带来方便。

利用多卫星平台和Argo浮标观测资料,分析研究了2004年台风婷婷(Tingting)引起海洋上层温盐结构和叶绿素a浓度的时空变化特征.结果发现,台风婷婷过境时沿着其路径诱发强烈的上升流,混合层内海水混合加剧,冷涡加强,出现了大范围的海表温度降低和叶绿素a增加现象.台风前的冷涡区域,出现大面积的"冷斑"和"藻华带",且维持时间更长;而在台风前的暖涡区域内,则生物物理响应不明显.因此,先前的海洋环境对于台风引起的上层生物物理响应具有重要意义.

Impacts of Typhoons on the Kuroshio Large Meander:Observation Evidences被引量:10

The formation of the Kuroshio large meander in summer 2004 was investigated by using the cruise data,Argo profiles data,and satellite remote sensing data.The authors validated the point that cyclonic eddies contrib-uted to the large meander.Besides,.the impacts of ty-phoons on Kuroshio meanders were also studied.From 29 July to 4 August,the typhoons stirred the ocean and up-welled the deep water,which enhanced the existed cyc-lonic eddy,and immediately made a drastic meander of the Kuroshio.Moreover,the unexpected typhoons in June 2004 also contributed to the initial meander at the Tokara Strait.The result suggests an alternative meander mecha-nism of the Kuroshio path via the typhoon-eddy-Kuroshio interactions.It is argued that typhoons accompanied with cyclonic eddies,might play crucial roles in meanders of the Kuroshio.This will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of the western boundary flows,like the Kuroshio and the Gulf Stream,and will be useful in eddy-resolution models.

热带地区云量日变化的气候特征被引量:7

利用国际卫星云气候计划(ISCCP)1984—2003年共20年云量资料,统计分析了热带地区的云量日变化特征,研究结果表明,云量峰值时间和变化幅度在全球的分布都较为均匀,而海陆差异明显。高云和低云在变化机制上相对独立,其云量日变化并非同步。全球云量日变化由4类基本形式组成,分别为洋面高云型、陆面高云型、洋面低云型和陆面低云型。高云日变化与地表辐射加热状况密切相关,其形式在洋面和陆面类似,均为早晨出现云量最小值而午后到达云量峰值。相比于洋面,陆面高云的峰值在夜间持续时间较长,可发展至更为稳定深厚的云系。低云多在局地5时附近出现云量峰值,18时左右达到云量极小值,其中陆面低云在12时出现第二峰值。
