Phase-controlled gain, phase shift, and group velocity using a room-temperature active-Raman-gain medium

A four-level tripod active-Raman-gain scheme is analyzed for obtaining phase-controlled gain, phase shift, and group velocity at room temperature. The scheme can be used to eliminate significant probe field atten- uation or distortion which is unavoidable in the scheme based on electromagnetically induced transparency. It is shown that the intensity gain, phase shift, and group velocity of a probe field can be simultaneously manipulated by changing the relative phase of two pump fields. The scheme is also different from that proposed recently by Deng et al. where a probe-field gain always exists. New features of the scheme presented here raise the possibility of designing rapidly responding optical switches and gates for optical information processing.

Theoretical analysis of the second-harmonic light power in a biaxial crystal被引量:2

Theoretical analyses are presented on the critically phase-matched second-harmonic generation (SHG) in a biaxial crystal with the focused fundamental Gaussian beams. The dependence of the second-harmonic light power on the phase matching conditions, focused geometries, walk-off effects, and absorptions are discussed in detail. Expressions are presented for calculating the light power of the types I and II SHGs in the biaxial crystal, applied to optimize the blue light generation with the LiB305 crystal. A maximum conversion efficiency of around 37% is obtained with 798-nm laser power of 500 mW.

Effective mass approach for a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice被引量:1

We study the stationary and propagating solutions for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a periodic optical potential with an additional confining optical or magnetic potential. Using an effective mass approximation we express the condensate wave function in terms of slowly-varying envelopes modulating the Bloch modes of the optical lattice. In the limit of a weak nonlinearity, we derive a nonlinear Schrdinger equation for propagation of the envelope function which does not contain the rapid oscillation of the lattice. We then consider the ground state solutions in detail in the regime of weak, moderate and strong nonlinear interactions. We describe the form of solution which is appropriate in each regime, and place careful limits on the validity of each type of solution. Finally we extend the study to the propagating dynamics of a spinor atomic BEC in an optical lattice and some interesting phenomena are revealed.

Ultraslow optical solitons via electromagnetically induced transparency:a density-matrix approach被引量:1

We study the ultraslow optical solitons in a resonant three-level atomic system via electromagnetically induced transparency under a density-matrix (DM) approach. The results of linear and nonlinear optical properties are compared with those obtained by using an amplitude variable (AV) approach. It is found that the results for both approaches are the same in the linear regime if the corresponding relations between the population-coherence decay rates in the DM approach and the energy-level decay rates in the AV approach are appropriately imposed. However, in the nonlinear regime there is a small difference for the self-phase modulation coefficient of the nonlinear SchrSdinger equation that governs the time evolution of probe pulse envelope. All analytical predicts are checked by numerical simulations.
