Ionospheric longitudinal variations at midlatitudes: Incoherent scatter radar observation at Millstone Hill被引量:6

Incoherent scatter radar (ISR) extra-wide coverage experiments during the period of 1978-2011 at Millstone Hill are used to investigate longitudinal differences in electron density. This work is motivated by a recent finding of the US east-west coast difference in TEC suggesting a combined effect of changing geomagnetic declination and zonal winds. The current study provides strong supporting evidence of the longitudinal change and the plausible mechanism by examining the climatology of electron density Ne on both east and west sides of the radar with a longitude separation of up to 40o for different heights within 300-450 km. Main findings include: 1) The east-west difference can be up to 60% and varies over the course of the day, being positive (East side Ne > West side Ne) in the late evening, and negative (West side Ne > East side Ne) in the pre-noon. 2) The east-west difference exists throughout the year. The positive (relative) difference is most pronounced in winter; the negative (relative) difference is most pronounced in early spring and later summer. 3) The east-west difference tends to enhance toward decreasing solar activity, however, with some seasonal dependence; the enhancements in the positive and negative differences do not take place simultaneously. 4) Both times of largest positive and largest negative east-west differences in Ne are earlier in summer and later in winter. The two times differ by 12-13 h, which remains constant throughout the year. 5) Variations at different heights from 300-450 km are similar. Zonal wind climatology above Millstone Hill is found to be perfectly consistent with what is expected based on the electron density difference between the east and west sides of the site. The magnetic declination-zonal wind mechanism is true for other longitude sectors as well, and may be used to understand longitudinal variations elsewhere. It may also be used to derive thermospheric zonal winds.

电离层Alfven谐振器对地面观测到的地磁信号的影响初步研究被引量:5

本文研究了0.1~10 Hz频率范围内的ULF波从磁层到地面的传播,得到了解析解,分析了电离层Alfven谐振器、磁倾角、电离层电导率、以及波频率对地面观测到的地磁信号的影响.数值结果表明:在磁层中剪切波在竖直方向有明显的谐振结构;地面观测到的信号在IAR谐振频率出现极大值,其谐振频率随磁倾角的增大而增大;电离层电导率的变化可以改变IAR的谐振频率,并能改变波的透射,从而影响地面地磁信号的频谱.

电离层总电子含量的短期预报方法的误差评估被引量:1

用统计学的方法分析了用自相关分析法和改进的克里格插值法对中国地区电离层总电子含量(TEC)进行短期预报的预报误差。结果表明:预报误差的大小在地域上呈现出由北向南逐渐增大的趋势,时间上,在二分季节误差较大,误差日变化的峰值出现在午后。而相对误差则是在冬季最大,在夏季最小;相对误差的日变化为双峰结构,峰值出现的时间在8点和20点附近。从总体上看,在提前一小时预报中国地区电离层TEC时,相对误差为12%左右。通过统计对比单站预报和区域重构对最终预报误差的影响可以看出,单站预报误差起主要作用。因此,改进单站预报方法十分重要,可以有效地提高预报精度。同时,也需要增加并合理布局全球定位系统(GPS)接收台站。

本文从质量和电荷守恒方程出发,分析了控制电离层等离子体R-T不稳定性线性增长的各种因素,重点研究了热层风和背景电场的空间梯度对R-T不稳定性线性增长的影响.结果表明,热层风场和背景电场两者的空间梯度对R-T不稳定性线性增长有不可忽视的促进或抑制作用;对R-T不稳定性线性增长起促进作用还是起抑制作用,依赖热层风场和背景电场及其空间梯度的方向;对R-T不稳定性线性增长影响的显著程度主要依赖于热层风场和背景电场两者空间梯度的大小.数值计算结果表明,对典型的背景电离层条件,磁力线顶点高度为330 km时,对线性增长率的影响最高达到120%.

SuperDARN CUTLASS Finland radar observations of high-latitude magnetic reconnections under northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions被引量:5

A number of backscatter power enhancement events with "equatorward-moving radar auroral forms" in the high-latitude ionosphere were observed by SuperDARN CUTLASS Finland radar when the IMF was northward during 09:00 -10:00 UT on 26 March 2004. These events were also associated with sunward flow enhancements at each location in the Northern Hemisphere which were shown in ionospheric convections measured by the SuperDARN radars. These are typical features of high-latitude (lobe) magnetic reconnections. The durations of the velocity enhancements imply that the evolution time of the lobe reconnections is about 8-16 min from their origin at the reconnection site to their addition to the magnetotail lobe again. In additional, the Double Star TC-1 spacecraft was moving from magnetosheath into magnetosphere, and crossing the magnetopause near the subsolar region during this interval, and observed typical low-latitude magnetic reconnection signatures. This infers that the dayside high- and low-latitude reconnections may occur simultaneously.
